The monumental gate of the Beyazıt Campus is the symbol of university culture and academic life in Turkey and the campus itself spreads out on one of the seven hills of Istanbul, with a view of both the Marmara Sea and the Golden Horn. The campus leads on to Beyazıt Square, one of the historical centres of our city. The Beyazıt Campus hosts a number of faculties, schools, institutes and Rectorate administrative units at its center and in its surroundings. With activities organized by students and clubs, it has an exceedingly lively atmosphere. The campus has the infrastructure to sustain all manners of activities; and meetings, panels, symposiums, concerts and festivals create an atmosphere where science, culture and the arts mingle with one another. Faculty of Political Science is also in Beyazıt Campus.
Faculty of Political Sciences
The aim of education in the Faculty of Political Sciences is to provide students with a framework to understand political, social and economic processes and their transformation at both local and international levels. This will serve to prepare them as more conscious, rational, and effective citizens and more constructive participants in public affairs both in Turkey and the world. The discipline of Public Administration analyzes the processes by which decisions and policies are made within administrative systems and particularly within the state. The discipline also deals with the practical side of government; through the analysis of the organization, management and implementation of public policies and public organizations at national and local governments. International relations, as a field of study, provides systematic analysis of traditional issues such as security, strategy, diplomacy, war and peace. With globalization, the field is taking on an interdisciplinary character, involving issues of political economy, environment, human rights, democratization, etc.
The course offerings of the Department of International Relations address the widening scope of the discipline, especially by emphasizing the political science approach. The aim of the courses is to explore concepts like power, authority, legitimacy, social class, gender, ethnicity, political participation on the one hand, and institutions like state, government, political parties, pressure groups and international organizations on the other. The main concern of the Management department is to develop the skills required to confront the challenges of a changing world. The successful managers of the future should be able to cope with the complexities of change and an economic environment which is best characterized by keen competition. The programs emphasis is on analytical methods and problem solving rather than a mere description of existing practices. Quantitative analysis and behavioral sciences are integrated into the programs.
The courses in our faculty are in Turkish but the lecturers are helping to the Erasmus student with the courses. For example you can prepare some essays which are in English according to the subjects of the course and these essays can be criteria for your success. For course descriptions and ECTS please click here.
Besides, from 2009-2010 Academic Year there will be a special course which will be in English and only for the ERASMUS students who will come to our faculty. The course is called: Turkish Politics and Society. It will be valued at 7 ECTS credits and available in each Spring and Fall semesters. The course is for 8 weeks time and includes different lecturers seminars which are :
Introduction to Turkish Politics and Society I
Introduction to Turkish Politics and Society II
From Empire to Republic: Socio-Economic and Political History of Turkey
Turkish Foreign Politics
Turkey and European Union
Turkey in the Age of Migration
Human Rights in Turkey
Current Issues in Turkish Economy
There may be small differences in academic calender every year but generally the Fall Semester is starting at the beginning of October and finishing at the end of January and the Spring Semester is starting at the beginning of March and finishes at the end of June.
The postgraduate students can also apply to our faculty if there is an ERASMUS agreement with their home institution in postgraduate level also. We have both master and PhD programs in Public Administration Department and International Relations Department.
The Faculty of Political Science is one of the University units with most foreign students and gives education in three departments under 12 divisions. The duration of education is 8 semesters. The language of education is Turkish. Our Faculty is located at the Beyazit Campus and has a library with 20.000 books and domestic-international periodical publications.

Turkish Language Training
In addition to the academic experience of being in a new country, we believe the knowledge you will gain about the language and culture of the country you are visiting is also of significant value. Therefore, we organize Turkish Language and Culture courses free of charge at the Istanbul University Language Centre for ERASMUS students. These courses take place in three terms, winter, spring and summer, in classes of 15 to 20 using contemporary teaching methods in a warm and friendly family atmosphere. In addition to the course and workbooks prepared with the great experience of the teaching staff of our centre to facilitate the learning of Turkish, we also use listening CDs. Lessons are supported with audio-visual materials. Our centre also organizes periodical seminars in fields such as Turkish Architecture, Traditional Turkish Handicrafts, Turkish Music, Turkish Literature, Turkish Folklore, Turkish Theatre with guest academicians and artists.

Accommodation
In a large metropolitan area like Istanbul, finding economic and suitable accommodation is one of the biggest problems. Our University is working meticulously to find a solution to this problem by opening new halls of residence. A limited number of students are given accommodation at the halls of residence on the Avcılar and Cerrahpasa campuses.
The majority of our students prefer the halls of residence of the Loans and Dormitories Agency. If they request accommodation, ERASMUS students have priority placement in dormitories of the Loans and Dormitories Agency in areas close to the campuses. These dormitories that meet the accommodation requirement of the majority of students in Turkey are preferred for being economical and generally close to university campuses. If you prefer to be placed in one of these dormitories, please fill in the dormitory application form at
http://www.istanbul.edu.tr/uaik/ABegitim/gelenformlar.php
In addition to University Halls of Residence and the Loans and Dormitories Agency dormitories, private dormitories, boarding houses and flats for rent are further alternatives for the solution of the accommodation problem. If you are thinking of renting a flat, you may find a more economic solution by getting together with friends. Istanbul, one of the largest cities in the world, presents a variety of alternatives from a wide price range. If you would like to receive more information regarding these issues beforehand, you may want to communicate with other ERASMUS students at http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/iuerasmus/ and receive information regarding all relevant issues.
ISTANBUL

Location
The Istanbul provincial territory covers a total area of 5.512 km2. The Istanbul Strait, otherwise known as the Bosphorus, connects the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea, separates the Asian Continent and the European Continent and divides the city of Istanbul into two. Istanbul is the only city in the world situated on two continents. The province is bordered by the Black Sea in the north, the high hills of the Kocaeli mountain range in the east, the Marmara Sea in the south and the water line trail of the Ergene Basin in the west. Istanbul covers 9,7% of the territory of Turkey, and is the most important province of Turkey in terms of its population. According to the 2000 General Census, the total population of Istanbul was 10.041.477. The annual increase in population is 35 per thousand. There are 27 districts within the stanbul provincial borders. These are, Avcılar, Küçükçekmece, Bakırköy, Bahçelievler, Bağcılar, Güngören, Esenler, Bayrampaşa, Zeytinburnu, Fatih, Eminönü, Beyoğlu, Beşiktaş, Şişli, Kağıthane, Sarıyer, Gaziosmanpaşa and Eyüp in the west and Üsküdar, Beykoz, Kadıköy, Kartal, Pendik, Tuzla, Ümraniye, Adalar, Maltepe and Sultanbeyli in the east. Büyükçekmece, Çatalca, Silivri and Şile are independent districts.
Brief History
With its history stretching back approximately 8000 years, Istanbul is an ancient area of habitation. An intense wave of settlement began in İstanbul 5000 years ago and this triggered the appearance of city principalities. However, the foundations of todays Istanbul were laid in the 7th century B.C. The city was rebuilt by Emperor Constantine in the 4th century A.D. and made capital; and preserved its position for 16 centuries as capital throughout the Roman, Byzantian and Ottoman periods. Emperor Constantine made Istanbul a centre of Christianity, and when it was conquered by the Ottomans in 1453 it became the most important centre of Islam. Although the capital was moved to Ankara following the announcement of the foundation of the Republic, stanbul is still the trade, art and culture centre of Turkey. Istanbul has a unique position in the world as a city at the crossroads of great civilizations and has hosted communities from a variety of belief systems and traditions. Therefore Istanbul will continue to present its unequalled treasures with its history, its historical relics, its institutions, its people and its traditions.
Living On Two Continents...
Transport in Two Continents
Istanbul will leave an impression on you not only with its unique geographical position, but also with its crowded population, heavy traffic, and transport network, which might at first appear a bit complicated!
The Istanbul City Transport and Campus Layout Map you will find in the back of your information package shows the rail systems, sea transport lines and motorways and also the locations of the 7 campuses of Istanbul University. We suggest you use the website http://www.iett.gov.tr for information about the stops and routes of City (Belediye) Buses. You can find out about timetables and see how you can get from one point to the other and the closest stops. The Istanbul Sights Map shows the locations of the sights described in the Istanbul section. We hope both maps will help you throughout the time you are in our city.
Transport in Istanbul
The residential layout of Istanbul has a dispersed plan and the transport network is composed of different systems. Both the student pass and the intelligent ticket akbil are valid in all transport systems. For more detailed information regarding transport systems and to find out about departure and arrival times, please visit:
http://www.ibb.gov.tr/tr-TR/KenteBakis/GunlukYasam/KenticiUlasim/
Akbil
Akbil is an intelligent ticket system created with the aim of unifying all transport systems with a single and practical application. There are two types: Mavi Akbil/The Blue Akbil and prepaid akbil. The Blue Akbil can be uploaded in monthly installments. The Blue Akbil can be limitlessly used on certain lines, however does not have the free connection feature. Apart from some special status lines, you can travel through all connections free for a period of 1,5 hours on all IETT vehicles, the underground, the tramway, the light metro and the IDO City Line Ferries.
For detailed information: http://www.iett.gov.tr
Buses
The most extensive system of transport allowing you to reach every corner of the city is the bus system. There are two types of buses, the red and white buses run by the municipality and the privately run "halk", i.e. public buses. The routes of the public buses are also controlled and organized by the municipality. Tickets can be purchased for both. Ticket prices are the same for all destinations, whether you are travelling to the next stop, or the final destination, the ticket price will be the same. You must purchase your ticket in advance of the journey. Tickets can be purchased from ticket sales points right next to bus stops or from the small buffets next to stops. Buying tickets in batches is more practical. In public buses tickets can be bought on the bus. Each bus has illuminated plates showing the stops and destination of the bus you are travelling on.
Dolmuş (Minibuses)
A transport system, unique to Turkey, the minibus is highly functional. The routes of minibuses are predefined. The fee you pay is proportional to the distance you travel. Fees are determined by the municipality. Pay the driver by telling him your destination.
Ferries and Boats
Ferries and boats are among the most enjoyable ways of travelling between the two banks of the city. There are many piers along the Bosphorus. Beşiktaş, Kabataş, Üsküdar and Eminönü are the busiest piers. Tickets for the ferries and the privately run boats are bought from ticket offices located at all piers.
Seabuses
The seabus is a much faster means of transport than the ferry and enables you to go to much farther destinations. Seabuses travel to various points on the Bosphorus and the Marmara Sea.
Underground
The construction of the Istanbul underground is in progress and the only line that operates at the moment is between Taksim and 4.Levent. When finished, the underground will relieve the İstanbul traffic network to a large extent.
Tramway
The tramway operates between Zeytinburnu and Kabatas and on a route that includes Sultanahmet, Eminönü and Beyazıt.
Light Metro
The Light Metro system operating between Aksaray and the Airport presents a fast solution for inner city transport. There are 18 stations. The train intervals are reduced to 5 minutes in busy hours. The Light Metro takes 32 minutes between Aksaray and the Airport.
Suburban Trains
Suburban trains operate regularly between Sirkeci-Halkalı and Haydarpaşa-Gebze.
Taxis
The easiest, however most expensive, way of travelling from one point to another in Istanbul. Taxis stand out with their yellow colour and the yellow signplates on their top. The moment you think you are lost, you can get on a taxi and ask to be taken to the closest place you know. The fee you pay is what says on the taximeter. Taxis in Turkey do not normally receive tips, so don't feel obliged to make a further payment.
How to go from the airport to the university:
At the airport, first go to the Light Rail System Station of the airport. Officers at information kiosks will help you find your way.
The Light Rail System operates between the Airport and Aksaray. Aksaray is a transfer station.
After getting off at the Aksaray Station, take the Zeytinburnu-Kabatas tramway line.
Get on the tramway in the Kabatas direction, and get off at the third stop, Beyazıt.
The Beyazıt stop is at walking distance to Beyazıt Square. The main entrance gate of Istanbul University opens to Beyazıt Square. You can easily find the University Beyazıt campus following Beyazıt Square signposts after getting off the tramway.
The officers at the University entrance will guide you to the Rectorate Building where the International Academic Relations Committee Erasmus Coordination Office is.
Social and Cultural Life
Istanbul will provide you with festivals, exhibitions, theatres, cinemas, concerts and a lively environment in any topic you can think of. To follow events and buy tickets you can use the www.biletix.com.tr and www.istanbul.net.tr addresses. The English edition of the monthly Time Out Istanbul magazine sold at newsagents and bookshops will inform you about everything that's on.
Istanbul, City of Festivals

Communication Services
Telephone
Turkey has a highly active telephone network. Telephone and internet Access services are provided by Türk Telekom, one of the largest companies in the world in its field. Turkey is ranked 13th in the world in terms of the number of its landline telephones. You are able to call any number within the country or around the world by entering the required codes. For calls within the same area code it is sufficient to enter the 7 digit telephone number. If you want to call a number from a different area code, first dial 0, then the area code and finally the 7 digit telephone number. For international calls, enter double 0, followed by the country code, the area code and the telephone number.
Istanbul has two different area codes. The area code for the European side is 212, and for the Anatolian side 216. Pay phones are installed in squares, hospitals, terminals, train stations, ports, tube stations, housing estates and on campuses and operate by tokens, call cards, credit cards and smart cards. Tokens and cards to be used with pay phones are sold at Türk Telekom dealers.
